FESPA (Federation of European Screen Printing Associations) gathers currently 28 screen and digital printing local organisations from Europe, Canada and Japan.
In the previous screen printing epoch there was no cooperation of branch companies. “Those who new how to do something kept their knowledge in secret” – as Bjarne Dahl said, president of the Danish Screen Printing Association – “technology did not spread among the countries, even the simplest patents were connected with high licence payments”. With time the local organisations gained more importance, there appeared a necessity of translating technical texts from English, in which they were written, into other languages. In 1962 FESPA was founded. There were 8 founder-members: Netherlands, France, Sweden, Great Britain, Germany, Denmark, Norway and Italy. The goal of the organisation was to develop the knowledge and share it with printers and suppliers, as well as promoting of screen printing throughout Europe. Nowadays FESPA has 28 European members and 4 outside Europe. The collapse of the “iron curtain” in autumn 1989 made it possible for the first time to make easy contacts with the Central and Eastern European countries. There the screen printing was developing very well, especially printing on textiles as well as glass, ceramics and electronics. Suppliers from the Western Europe carried out their sales through government agencies and foreign trade centres. The Central European countries became an object of interest for the Western Europe due to its potential, in particular on the advertising product market. Czechoslovakia was in the late 60s the member of FESPA. That was also the first country , which later returned to FESPA, before other countries joined it (Hungary, Poland, Romania, Bulgaria, Russia, Croatia, Slovenia, Yugoslavia and Turkey). In this way in twelve years the number of FESPA members increased from 14 to 26 national associations. At the moment there are 28 members, including the newest one – Ukraine, which was accepted in 2006. FESPA provides direct support for new members by organising series of exhibitions called Mini-FESPA. The concept of Michael Domburger has been realised by Lascelle Barrow and Michael Caza. They organised informational stands of suppliers as well as two days’ seminars in Hungary, Poland, Czech Republic and Slovenia. These events brought financial profits not only to the countries where they were taking place. Further FESPA support was granted to trainings – the prior need in the Eastern European countries – through financing trips of trainers from the Western Europe for seminars and trainings. In 2004 the Project Committee was established, whose aim is to support local associations and react to the needs of local markets. The projects are among others: Mini-FESPA, publications, translations, workshops. Since 2004 there has been 66 projects submitted by 17 associations (the Polish one has submitted 10 projects); 25 of them were realised and 21 are at the stage of implementation. One of the latest enterprise is the e-learning course and the recently launched on-line forum, which gives the associated members the opportunity to ask questions concerned with technical problems of screen, pad or digital printing. This is a FESPA experts panel under the chairmanship of Michael Caza. What is more, FESPA has published a handbook entitled “Planed Friendly” (written by Michael Caza and recently updated with the most actual regulations). The handbook has been handed over to all associations federated in FESPA. Italy, Spain and Poland are planning to translate it, adapt it to local regulations and publish the guidebook.
